Flying Waters is a site-specific artwork by Icelandic artist Egill Sæbjörnsson, commissioned by Therme Art for Therme Group as part of the artist’s larger immersive installation The Mother, conceived for Therme Bucharest. Blending water, light, sound, and movement, the work transforms architectural façades into living canvases that merge the boundaries between physical and virtual experience.
Through Flying Waters, Sæbjörnsson continues his exploration of technology, animation, and the unseen energies that shape perception. Jets of water take on animated form, creating fluid sculptures that appear to defy gravity. The work invites viewers to reconsider their relationship with nature, architecture, and the digital realm, revealing how imagination animates the world around us.
First unveiled in Berlin in 2020 during Therme Art x Messe in St. Agnes as part of Gallery Weekend and Berlin Art Week, Flying Waters has since been presented internationally, including at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival 2023, where it was projected onto the façade of the Evangelical Church Sf. Maria, Romania’s tallest tower. Each presentation adapts to its architectural context, creating a dialogue between water, structure, and place.
